Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services (NTFES) is enhancing its disaster preparedness with the appointment of an embedded meteorologist, funded through the Australian Government’s Disaster Ready Fund (DRF).
Under a 3 year agreement with the Bureau of Meteorology, Senior Forecast Meteorologist Billy Lynch will join NTFES to provide real‑time weather analysis, modelling and forecasting during both planning and emergency operations.
Mr Lynch brings more than 20 years of experience forecasting Territory weather, including:
- extensive work on tropical cyclones
- severe storms
- flooding
- large‑scale fire events.
The DRF‑supported role will improve how NTFES uses live weather and river data to inform timely and accurate risk assessments across the Territory’s diverse environments.
This initiative is part of round 3 of the Disaster Ready Fund, which is supporting 96 projects nationally to improve disaster resilience in 2025–26.
