Know your neighbours
- Introduce yourself.
- Wave or have a chat.
- Invite them for coffee.
- Walk your dogs, exercise or just take a walk together.
- Be aware of what is going on in the neighbourhood. Report suspicious behaviour, people or vehicles to police on 131 444.
- Give your neighbours a contact number.
Remember! Your neighbours aren't just next door to you!
Neighbours include people across the road, in your immediate street or block and the wider neighbourhood.
You can even put one of Neighbourhood Watch NT's 'Hey there neighbour!' cards to introduce yourself in your neighbour's post box.
Being a good neighbour
Being a good neighbour is about showing kindness, respect, and consideration towards those who live nearby. Here are some ways to being a good neighbour:
- take the initiative to introduce yourself to your neighbours when you move in – building a friendly relationship from the start paves the way for good communication
- be mindful of your neighbour's property boundaries and privacy
- if you notice your neighbour struggling with something, offer your assistance, it could be as simple as helping to carry groceries
- from a safety aspect maintain your property and keep it tidy
- try to address any issues with your neighbour calmly and respectfully – open communication can help resolve conflicts before they escalate
- embrace diversity and respect cultural differences among your neighbours.
- participate in community events or gatherings, it's a great way to build connections and strengthen the sense of community.

If you neighbour is on holidays, you can help them keep their home safe by:
- collecting their mail
- taking their bins in and out
- keeping an eye out for activity around their home
- watering their garden.
