Keeping your home safe

You can keep your home safe by following some simple principles of the surrounding environment:

  • keep your yard maintained to reduce places to hide
  • increase visibility from the street
  • cut back shrubbery around the house to ensure natural surveillance
  • keep the area around your home well-lit at night.

Opportunity and visibility can be key factors for break-ins. Below are some simple tips to help protect your home and belongings:

  • lock doors and windows, even when you are home
  • fit quality security doors, windows, locks, alarms and lighting
  • Lock your gates, sheds and garages – use padlocks, including on your letter box
  • consider the installation of movement sensor cameras or closed-circuit television (CCTV)
  • avoid leaving tools and other items outside that could be used to break into your home
  • mark your belongings with an engraver or ultra-violet pen with your licence number.

Check out Crime Stoppers NT for more security tips for home and your vehicle/s.
