Strengthening Territory liquor laws

The Northern Territory Government is cracking down on alcohol related anti-social behaviour.

Last night, the Liquor Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 passed in the Northern Territory Legislative assembly.

This bill increases the punishment for those who refuse to leave a licensed premises when asked from $176 to $880.

This deterrent measure will give licensed premises confidence strong repercussions are in place for people who choose to do the wrong thing in our pubs and clubs.

This bill directly addresses the harmful consumption of alcohol in prohibited public places, providing ex-officio officers (such as Transit Safety Officers) the authority to stop, search and seize containers of alcohol.

A legitimate place to consume clause will further be enacted under these amendments, meaning that licensees can refuse service to a customer if they cannot state the place where the alcohol is intended to be consumed.
