The first-ever NT Safety Expo, hosted by Neighbourhood Watch NT and the Territory Community Safety Coordination Centre, brought together NT Police, local safety experts, and the Alice Springs community for a day dedicated to public safety.
Held at the Alice Springs Convention Centre on Saturday 28 September 2024, the event ran from 9:00am to 3:00pm, offering informative and engaging activities throughout the day.
The expo aimed to raise awareness around key public safety measures and gave local businesses and organisations the opportunity to connect directly with their community.
Attendees enjoyed a range of interactive presentations, hands-on workshops, and the chance to chat with safety experts. The popular Coffee with a Cop session allowed residents to engage with officers in a relaxed setting, fostering stronger community relations.
NT Police had a strong presence, with support from:
- Territory Community Safety
- Recruitment and Selections
- Southern Traffic Operations
- Southern Community Engagement and Resilience Command
- Southern Dog Operations
- S/ALO Janet Turner
- Acting Assistant Commissioner James O'Brien
A wide variety of stalls showcased the latest products, equipment, technology, and services designed to improve home, vehicle, and personal safety.
In addition, attendees learned about the vital emergency services available in their community and how they can assist during times of need. Presentations on scam and cyber safety, as well as personal safety workshops, were particularly well-received, helping empower the community with practical tips for staying safe in the digital age.
Assistant Commissioner Janelle Tonkin highlighted the importance of community partnerships in her statement leading up to the event:
"For NT Police, community safety is not just a priority - it's our commitment. Collaborating with Neighbourhood Watch plays an indispensable role in building safer, stronger communities. By joining forces for initiatives like the Community Safety Expo, we empower our residents with vital information and foster a united, proactive approach to crime prevention."
This event marked a significant step forward in the collaborative efforts between NT Police and the Alice Springs community. A huge thank you to everyone involved in organising and participating in the expo, and to all who attended.
Together, we are working to make Alice Springs a safer and more connected place.
